About Sydney Heritage Builders

Sydney Heritage Builders specialise in building and conservation for heritage sites across Sydney and NSW. The company is led by Mark Spinks and Trent Cartwright, both stonemasons and builders with longstanding experience.

“We do a lot of projects in heritage conservation for government, public works and heritage architects,” explains Mark, a stonemason for more than 25 years.

Established for over ten years, the company has a team skilled in stonemasonry, brick and block laying, carpentry, steel fabricating, seismic stabilisation, structural building, heritage restoration and conservation. Their projects have earned them a National Trust Heritage Award.

Discovering the Female Factory

Mark approached SVSR looking for crane hire for a project at the Parramatta Female Factory, a convict-built barrack building constructed from locally quarried sandstone. Governor Macquarie commissioned the building in 1816 and it was designed by renowned convict architect Francis Greenway.

The building was collectively an assignment depot, prison, workplace and medical facility for convict women until 1847 when it was repurposed as a Lunatic Asylum. The building is part of a historic precinct that also includes the former orphanage known as Parramatta Girls Home.

The buildings are currently not open to the public, but most are visible from Fleet Street in Parramatta.

Restoring a landmark façade

The project involved the restoration of a heritage façade at the Parramatta Female Factory precinct.

“The building had failed footings that required replacement,” Mark explains. “The façade is made of very large stones that we dismantled one by one with the crane. We then had to number each stone, carefully stack them in groups and replace the footings. We then reassembled the façade stone by stone as it originally was.”

SVSR provided a crawler mini crane and operator for a full month over the course of the extensive job.

The crane hire experts

The SVSR team pride themselves on careful work, something that Mark noticed. “We do have a lot of issues with cranes,” he says, “as a lot of drivers aren’t aware of the care required for a heritage site.

SVSR has an excellent team and the crane operator was great. He was very knowledgeable and set up the crane in the right spot with no issues. He was also very easy to deal with and we got on well, which makes the job much easier.”

SVSR is the mini crane expert, servicing Sydney and NSW with a powerful fleet of mini cranes.

Our cranes are exceptionally sturdy and agile, ensuring we can access spaces and terrains that others can’t.
